A rough estimate: 2 years of high school language = 1 year of COCC language
Practically, if a student did well (A's and B's) in two years of high school, she is a prime candidate for the 2nd year of our program.
- Factors that send some students back to review all of parts of our 1st year:
- It's been a long time since high school.
- The student wants review to feel more comfortable.
- The high school foreign language program was not strong.
- The student didn't do very well in high school language.
If a student had 3 years of high school language, the should begin at COCC's second year (or come in at winter term).
If a student had 4 years of a language, she might consider reviewing COCC's second year or testing out by taking a CLEP exam.
Remember, high school graduates starting in 1997 must have either two years of a high school foreign language or two terms of the same language at the college level as an entrance requirement to Oregon's public four-year colleges and universities. See the OSU Cascades Campus Admissions site for more information.
