Transitions Workshop: Students Resources and Services

Web Treasure Hunt

Welcome to COCC’s web page! The web page is a great way to explore the College and discover services and resources that are available to COCC students. Use the web site to answer the following questions that are commonly asked by students who are new to college.

1. You want to come on to the Bend campus to check things out. Find directions for driving to campus and for setting up a campus tour. What department do you call to set up a tour?

2. How much does college cost? Find out what your bill would be (tuition and fees) if you took 6 credits, and then if you took 12 credits.

3. Hmmm, that's a lot of money. When is it due? Find out when the next term at COCC starts, and when your payment is due.

4. Time for financial assistance! Go to the Financial Aid web site, find the drop-down menu and select the FAQ link, and select "What types of aid are available at COCC?". Can you identify the three "types of aid" you can get through federal financial aid? Which one is the best?

5. This all sounds good....how do you apply? See if you can find the three steps for applying for federal student aid.

6. Imagine you need a part-time job. Are there services at COCC to help you find one? Type "Career Services" into the search window on the home page and sign up for a coccstudentjobs account to search for jobs.

7. What sort of school supplies will you need? The good news: usually you only need a textbook, and pad to take notes, and a good calendar to manage your assignments and homework. The bad news? Textbooks are REALLY expensive. How expensive? Find out how much it costs to buy books for a basic biology class (BI 101) by going to COCC's Bookstore web site and searching under Textbooks. Now, try to find the ASCOCC textbook bulletin board (hint: look under Student Life)--what is this, and do they have your book for less money?

8. Okay, you are ready to take some courses. How will you know who your advisor is? How will you plan your schedule? Look at the Getting Started at COCC page to see how advising works the first time. Then, check out the advising web site to see how you get a personal advisor. Pretend your advisor is Zelda Zeigler; use the Campus Directory to find out how to contact her.

9. Pretend you have a friend in class who is overwhelmed with some problems at home. Is there help for him at COCC? Check out COCC's personal counseling services; how does he make an appointment?

10. All caught up on your homework? Check out the student newspaper. It is available online! What are their most recent articles?

11. You overhear someone in your math class worrying about an upcoming exam; they have trouble with numbers and often reverse them when they write (especially if they are nervous, such as when they are taking a test). Research COCC's Disability Services--can they get special assistance to help them with this?

12. Nice work! Time for a break. Find a reward for yourself at COCC. Clue: try frisbee golf, food service, massage clinics, student programs, or discounts for your student ID card.
